Location information: Location information: Marina di Carrara is a seaside resort on the Apuan coast, part of the municipality of Carrara, known as a holiday resort and for the annual Marmotec fair. The village is part of an urban agglomeration interspersed with pine forests and parks, which extends without interruption between the sea and the center of Avenza, where the Carrara-Avenza railway station is located, while to the west it is connected to the Ligurian town of Marinella di Sarzana.

The urban area of Carrara and Marina di Carrara
Marina di Carrara, formerly known as Marina di Avenza, was born by the will of the Duke of Modena Francesco III. The first attempts to build a safe port of call at the Marina di Avenza date back to the 18th century and were carried out by the Estensi, who commissioned the English ing. Aschenden, sent directly by the British Government to which Francis III had requested funding. The adverse historical events did not allow the realization of the work, but the Dukes of Modena did not desist from the attempt to revitalize the Carrarese coast in which they had the only outlet to the sea; in 1833 the government arranged for a summary subdivision of the coastal area and assigned, for free, the building land. Despite these "incentives", however, the demographic development was stagnating and the same was true for the structures necessary for the embarkation of the marbles: the small Estense fleet continued to be without a port and without a sufficiently secure docking. It was an Englishman, the industrialist Guglielmo Walton, active for many years in Carrara, who in 1851 had the first large pre-port structure designed and built: a long loading dock that finally allowed the ships to dock quite easily. The intensification of traffic favored, of course, also the demographic development: a sign of the new needs linked to this aspect of reality was the construction of a large parish church, begun in 1857 and completed many years later.

Marina di Carrara includes an area of 4.97 km² on which a population of around 15 000 lives: this figure, which is constantly increasing, reflects the expansion of the nucleus by the sea. If we consider that in 1881, when it was surveyed for the first time as a separate demographic entity, Marina di Carrara had just 1,590 inhabitants, the speed of its development can be measured more effectively. It is only after the war, however, that there has been a real demographic boom, also favored by the migration of the resident population in the upstream countries.

From west to east, between the port area and the border with Liguria, the country has a large sandy beach equipped with umbrellas and cabins, which for most of the extension is managed by private bathing establishments.

The urban fabric is interspersed with large pine forests, typical of the coastal cities of Versilia, and the Municipality of Carrara has a very ambitious project to make park the area of Villa Ceci, an ancient residence of the late nineteenth century, surrounded by an extensive green area .

From an industrial point of view it is worth noting the Nuovi Cantieri Apuania, which for several years have specialized in the construction of cruise ferries, reaching levels of excellence.

Of great interest from the tourist point of view is the Nautical Club, which over time has produced important sailing personalities: from Luca Santella to the Chieffi brothers to Paolo Bottari. It is an easily accessible and equipped landing point. Some 20th century buildings, such as Villa Giampaoli, are also relevant.

In Marina di Carrara there is an impressive trade fair complex capable of hosting exhibitions and festivals of all kinds, including the September Fest, attended by a delegation from Ingolstadt, a Bavarian town twinned with Carrara. In 1977 there was an episode of Games without Frontiers.

Piazza Menconi with the church of the Holy Family
Church of the Santissima Annunziata, consecrated in the second half of the nineties to face the urban and demographic development of the northern part of Marina di Carrara.
Oratory of Christ on the Cross, a church originally from the northern part of Marina di Carrara, before the Church of the Santissima Annunziata was built. Still pertinence of the parish of the Santissima Annunziata. It is inserted during the procession of Good Friday in the route of the Via Crucis that winds along the urban fabric.
Oratory of San Giuseppe, built in 1776 and in 1840 donated to the new parish of the Holy Family for the religious needs of what was then a small fishing village. Today used for various parish uses.
Oratory of Sant'Erasmo, prior to the seventeenth century, was dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. Having disappeared before 1822, the picture of his high altar is today in the Church of San Pietro in Avenza.
Oratory of Santa Maria Vergine, owned by the counts Del Medico, was still in existence in the 19th century [5].
Oratory of Santa Croce, a public oratory owned by the Monzoni counts, built in the 18th century, it is now private and dedicated to the Saints Prospero and Modesto.

A regular road network serves the built-up area of Marina, which sees the seafront as the axis formed by the Cristoforo Colombo and Giovanni da Verrazzano avenues.

Marina di Carrara is located in the immediate vicinity of the Carrara tollbooth, along the A12 motorway.
