In the hinterland of Grosseto, Montorsaio, is a hamlet of the municipality of Campagnatico, in the province of Grosseto
Located on the top of a hill, one of the south-eastern slopes of the Monte Leoni massif, it is about 10 km from the town's capital, about 60 km from Siena, about 44 km from Montalcino, 69 km from Saturnia and its famous thermal baths 41 km from Scansano and 58 km from Mount Amiata.
The town rises in medieval times and was controlled over time by various families, including the Ardengheschi, who held numerous feudal lands between the present municipal territories of Civitella Paganico and Roccastrada.
In the middle of the 13th century the center passed under the control of Siena, becoming the possession of the Salimbeni family until the late 14th century.
The Sienese rule, also exercised through noble families, continued until 1555, the year that sanctioned the definitive fall of the Republic of Siena and the passage in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany of all the territories and the places, including Montorsaio.
